Farshid Guilak, PhD

Dr. Farshid Guilak is the Mildred B. Simon Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University, Director of Research for the St. Louis Shriners Hospitals for Children, and co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine. His laboratory is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach to study the physiology and pathology of cartilage in osteoarthritis. His laboratory has spearheaded the application of genome engineering and synthetic biology to stem cells, in the context of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for applications in OA. He has published over 380 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-edited four books. He served as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomechanics for the past 20 years and continues to contribute to numerous other journal editorial boards, including serving as associate editor for OA&C. He has won several national and international awards for his research, including the Kappa Delta Award for orthopaedic research 3 times, the OARSI Basic Science Research Award, as well as 5 separate awards for mentoring. He was recently elected as a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He has also worked extensively in the translation of tissue engineering technologies and he is the Founder of Cytex Therapeutics, a startup company focusing on developing new regenerative medicine therapies for musculoskeletal conditions, and co-founder of several other biotechnology-based startups.
